May Is Insurance Month – And It’s More Exciting Than You Think!

May is full of sunshine, spring blooms… and insurance celebrations?! Yep, you read that right! It turns out May is the month for us insurance folks, and trust me, it’s not as dry as it sounds.

From New Homeowner’s Day on May 1st to National Life Insurance Day on the 2nd, and Travel Insurance Day on the 14th, the calendar is packed. But the one I hold closest to my heart is National Senior Fraud Awareness Day on May 15th.

Oh—and don’t forget, May is also Hurricane Preparedness Month, Building Safety Month, and Healthy Vision Month. Basically, May is all about protecting what matters most—our homes, health, and happiness.

As someone who just celebrated 10 years as an insurance agent, I can honestly say I love helping people protect their peace of mind. I’m not that pushy salesperson looking to “make a buck.” I’m someone who does the homework, researches all the options, and helps you make smart, confident decisions. Because let’s be real: We all sleep better when we know we’re covered.

Let’s dive into a few key highlights this month—and why they matter to you.

May 15 – National Senior Fraud Awareness Day

This day was established in 2018 by the U.S. Senate to raise awareness about the growing number of scams targeting older adults. Every year, I hear heartbreaking stories—friends, neighbors, and clients who’ve been targeted or fallen victim to fraud schemes.

Scams not only rob seniors of their money, but often their sense of safety and independence. It’s devastating—and preventable.

Let’s empower our senior community with knowledge:

Common Scams to Watch For:

• Fake Medicare or Social Security calls

• “Grandparent” scams (“Hi Grandma, I need money!”)

• Tech support imposters

• Sweepstakes/lottery scams

How to Protect Loved Ones:

• Talk regularly about financial safety

• Use call blockers or screen calls

• Don’t share personal info over the phone unless you initiated the call

• Monitor bank activity and credit reports

Report Suspected Fraud:

• Medicare Fraud Hotline: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)

• CMS Fraud Center: cms.gov

• Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) and State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIP)

• Local Law Enforcement or OIG (Office of Inspector General)

Fraud can be scary, but staying informed is one of the best protections we have.

May 14 – Travel Insurance Day

This one’s for the adventurers, beach loungers, business travelers, and globe-trotters out there.

Travel should be about making memories, not stressing over lost luggage or surprise hospital visits in another country. Even if you have amazing U.S.-based coverage, it likely won’t follow you abroad.

That’s where travel insurance comes in—like a safety net for your vacation.

Whether it’s:

• A single trip to Europe

• A gap year abroad

• Corporate travel

• Family vacations

I’ve got options to suit your needs.

Did you know?

• You can get coverage for up to $1 million in medical benefits

• Policies are available for travelers up to 84 years old

• Pre-existing conditions are covered

• Coverage is available for individuals, couples, families, students, and more

All Month Long – Healthy Vision Month

Let’s talk about those peepers.

With all the time we spend on screens—Zoom calls, social media, online shopping—our eyes are working overtime. And if you’re like me, you probably know you need to take breaks… but forget to.

This May, give your eyes a little extra love:

• Schedule your annual eye exam

• Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds

• Turn down that screen brightness (your retinas will thank you)

• Rock those UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors

Vision is one of those things we don’t appreciate enough—until it starts to fade. Let’s be proactive and take care of it now.
